Historically, hair has had a major role in society. From color used as a way of informing of classist ideologies and practices such as that of the Roman’s. In ancient Rome, hair dyeing was practiced by both men and women, especially among the upper classes who could afford such luxuries.

The most popular hair dye color among Romans was red. This color was the indicator of status, wealth and power. They used a plant to achieve the color red creating a dye called “henna” (Lawsonia inermis), which produced a range of red shades from light orange to deep red. This practice was particularly favored by women of high status and was seen as a symbol of beauty and wealth. Additionally, some Romans also used other substances like saffron or indigo to achieve different shades of blonde or black.
Hairstyles, become indications of rank or status. Men of high rank most often would have long beards. In the United States, for instance, politicians would wear powdered wigs to legislate. In Ancient Mexico, the hairstyles of the Aztecs would indicate status and age.
So, as you see, this is a practice which is part of history.
When I think about hair color and current times, not much has changed. In regards to color of hair and class representation, not much has changed either. Hair color is still expensive and a sign of status. For example, the most expensive color to achieve and maintain is blonde and to me this most times can be an indicator of economic status or at the very least aspirations. The bottom line being that if you’re going to be blonde you cant be broke with money or time. It takes money and time to keep it looking good.
Hair color now is not as much of a sign of political power but to some it still holds meaning. As such, we have the power to assign meaning and understanding to how we ascribe cultural significance to ourselves. This power is significant to change how we see and treat each other.
